Last year, she came home with a plastic baggie filled with unidentified bulbs. The bulbs stayed in this baggie most of the summer and by the end of the season, she had not only forgotten what they were, she thought they were mine.
Somehow the little plants ended up dumped in a dirt pile in the fall and once again slipped from everyone's mind until this week. While moving a pile of old mulch to the compost, I looked down to see snowdrops. Sure, they may not be the flashiest of flowers, but it's amazing how much little white blooms can motivate the gardening spirit.
I'm not really a 'bring it back alive' kind of person since my walks in the woods are usually in places that they don't like it if you take the plants home. She's had great success, however, in bringing things back from the forest and sticking them in the shadier spots of the yard. Her method seems ridiculously simple.
- Spot a plant that looks interesting.
- Break off a small clump with a hand trowel.
- Stick the clump in a baggy.
- Replant it in the yard.
The weather here is the typical, strange Maine sort of thing. It was 80 degrees yesterday and today seems just as hot and humid. Lincoln peas arrive at Cooks Hardware on Thursday, so I have today and tomorrow to get the beds ready. Hopefully, we get some small amount of spring before we dive into the heat of summer.
