More forgotten treasures

Late last fall I planted some spinach seeds. It was really much to late in the season for them to do anything, but I stuck the coldframe around them and left them there all winter. Periodically, I would peek my head in to see how frozen they were or if they'd died back entirely.

Now that warm weather is finally here, I must say that I'm surprised to see the spinach still going. I have no idea what the flavor will be like, but since it's growing in my pea bed, I'll pull them up today and see how they taste.

This year's spinach and lettuce get their own bed outside of the garden. The plan is to build a small but level foundation for the cold frame in an area that will get more sun late in the day. I'll use it to harden off plants in the early spring and then plant a continuous rotation of lettuce through the rest of the growing season.

I've gone a little crazy over the leafy vegetables this year with five kinds of lettuce and two kinds of spinach. My inspiration came from the English Knot Garden at this year's Flower Show. I figure, why not grow something that looks as nice on the table as it does in the yard?

Peas are on the schedule for today, which means the new lettuce bed is next.

I was out in the garden today, too, but not planting, just cleaning up.

Your flower show photos are good. I like that building better than all the other places they have been. Parking is a pain, though, unless you get in the garage close by.

Did you get your peas planted?

It's a neat old building, but I think I prefered the heated tents at Scarborough Downs myself.

I bought peas today, but I won't have time to plant them until Monday. I did do some cleanup work and got the shallots planted (yay for tomorrow's blog entry!)
