My chicken book came in! I still haven't been by the town offices to see if there are any restrictions on poultry at the new house, but my research into all things clucky starts now. The first book I picked up (there is always more than one book) is called Living With Chickens by Jay Rossier. It came recommended by several of the backyard chickens sites I've been browsing. As Saturday is middle of my work week, I haven't had any time for reading as of yet. I'm looking forward to settling down by the pool with my book to plot my flock.
Once again, I'm cheating of of J's paper. There's a movement called Give Peeps A Chance that is dedicated to getting South Portland to change the ordinance that bans folks from having chickens in their backyard. They've managed to get down to a final hearing but the push is still on. The Give Peeps A Chance effort is not about large-scale farming in the urban landscape. It's about families being able to keep a few pet hens for eggs. If you're a Maine resident who might one day like to keep a couple of chickens, or if you're lucky enough to have chickens now, lend your support to the South Portland effort.

Chickens rock, you will LOVE them. Although they can break your heart, too:-(
We have living with chickens, and it is a beautiful book and a nice read. Our favorite is Storey Publications Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow. We call it the chicken manual. It is more straightforward when you are looking for information in a hurry.
Thanks for the book recommendation. With so many out there, it's hard to choose one that will be good. Of course, I never, EVER get just one book on any subject. I just like books too much.
How many chickens do you have? How many did you start with? Have you always had chickens or are they a more recent addition to your life?
