My sister is forever complimenting the sweaters I knit. I can't imagine why since they are homely things, but I thought that since she seems to enjoy them, I'd try my hand at something a little more polished and fashionable for her. I have to admit, I'm very pleased with how this shrug turned out.I started with this pattern for a shrug. It's straightforward and quick-knitting. Essentially, it's a wide, ribbed scarf that gets sewn together at the ends to form sleeves. Once that's done, stitches are picked up around the edges and more ribbed knitting forms a collar and back. Easy peasie.
I wanted to add something a little more decorative, so I modified this pattern for bookend mitts and created a false sleeve to go inside the ribbed sleeves. It looked really good on her and I know with her fashion sense, she'll be able to figure out just the right pieces to wear with it.

Wow-whee! So nice. The shrug, the glove-things. Wow.
Well, the last post and this one shows me where to come if i have questions as I make my way into knitting! (A friend got me started a few weeks ago, but I need to figure out how to hold the yarn. I'm used to holding it in my left hand when I crochet -- my right hand doesn't know what to do with it. But I've heard one can hold it in the left hand too... But first must get needles, eh?)
Hah! It's a deal so long as I get to ask crochet questions. I just don't get crochet. My efforts have been quite sad thusfar.
If you haven't signed up for Ravelry yet, I highly recommend it. Not only lots of patterns (both knit and crochet, many of them free), but you can see other people's take on a project and check out their comments for pattern corrections or alterations. It's also handy for keeping track of your yarn stash, needles and hooks.
